"Tom" Clarence Ashley (1895–1967) was a true son of the Southern Appalachians—an old-time musician whose banjo rang with the rhythms of mountain life.
By the age of 16, he was performing at traveling medicine shows, captivating crowds with his clawhammer banjo style, guitar playing, and rich, distinctive voice. In the late 1920s, Ashley’s talent carried him from country fairs to the recording studio, where he found national attention both as a solo artist and alongside some of the era’s most celebrated string bands. His music not only entertained but helped carry the sound of the mountains to audiences far beyond his Tennessee home.
In 1925, Tom Ashley took part in the very first Mountain City Fiddlers’ Convention, joining fellow musicians in a landmark gathering that helped shape the future of old-time and country music.
